Thanks for the review, even if you had to lead off with the disclaimer. I have ordered the book, and hope it will be suitable to share with fundamentalists I know on both sides of the fence! Congrats on your upcoming book, too.

Ben,

Your review has piqued my interest, particularly with Schaeffer's contention that Christopher Hitchens is a sex-obsessed intellectual lightweight.

I can't speak to Mr. Hitchens' sexual obsessions, but he is an atheist and a socialist. As a Christian and a political conservative, I've seldom found myself in agreement with his positions. However, I've often appreciated Hitchens' independent thinking about matters ranging from US politics to Mother Teresa.

I guess I'll have to read Schaeffer's book.

SA--I think you'll like the book. Frank gave his readers a gift by moving beyond criticism of evangelicalism--which I've always found to be right on and helpful--to an affirmation of what he believes now. It is move that adds depth and color to the rest of his work--depth and color I didn't even know was needed until I read it. For me it was like watching a painter work. I always think the work is done and then she'll add a touch of color or of detail that changes everything.

Craig--I interested to know what you think of Portofino. Most of the people I know who have read Portofino have had some kind of interaction with the kind of people who are in the book. Certainly I grew up around a lot of people like the Becker family. But if you knew people like this you've never told me about it.

Enjoy the read!

Thank you so much for this review. Having just finished "Crazy for God" by F.S. -- and being a brought up fundamental Christian - and being now in a search for a better way - I think I have found it. Look forward to reading both Your book AND F.S. new book

Frank,

Thanks for dropping by my blog. This review was a pleasure to write, though, as I was telling my wife last night, it was hard to write because you book left me with a lot of thoughts and feelings--too many to put in a blog-length essay.

I don't yet have a publication date for my book other than that it will be part of WJK's Fall lineup, which includes all of the books they publish between June and December. I suspect (and hope) that I'll have an early summer release so that the book can be promoted at the Presbyterian Church's General Assembly in early July.

Cheers!

Ben: Thanks for the great kindness in taking the time to write this review of my book. I'm very grateful and looking forward to the publication of your book. Since reading it I've been reading, seeing and hearing stories about immigration and migration in a new way. Your compassionate outlook in the book combined with the stories you tell has opened my eyes and heart to people too easily forgotten as the "other." Let me know when the book is out so i may do all i can to spread the word. Very Best, Frank
